★ “Alznauer is a mathematician herself, and her loving tribute evokes Ramanujan's early years with rich and authentic detail, which Miyares' luminous compositions bring vividly to the page … A fascinating story beautifully told.”
~ Kirkus, Starred Review

★ “Alznauer deftly uses Ramanujan’s ponderings to illustrate complex mathematical concepts, including prime numbers, partitions, and infinite sums … Lush watercolors by Miyares capture the lyrical details of Ramanujan’s world.”
~ Publisher’s Weekly, Starred Review

★ “An illuminating picture-book biography of a fascinating, singular figure in the history of mathematics.”
~ Booklist, Starred Review

“This eloquently written picture-book biography gives voice to the brilliant—and self-taught—mathematician Srinivasa Iyengar Ramanujan.”
~ Horn Book Review

“The particular details of [Ramanujan’s] life in India are beautifully described and illustrated, and the generality of the kinds of things all children wonder about is engaging and heart-warming … The wonder of infinity contained in the palm of your hand. Lovely stuff.”
~ Christopher Danielson, author of Which One Doesn’t Belong

“Books from Amy Alznauer and Edmund Harriss signal that the reimagining of math education not only starts right at the beginning, but with imagination itself … I cannot recommend enough the two beautiful and brilliant books by these deeply creative and reflective mathematicians.”
~ Sunil Singh, author of Math Recess

Illustrator: Daniel Miyares

From Miyares: “Numbers haunted Ramanujan in his dreams. He couldn’t get away from thinking about them and how to find new life within them. That is how I feel about drawing and painting. Once I realized that, then it was a passion project for me. And I am so grateful. I think about visual storying telling differently because of this book.”

My BackStory

When I was five years old on a trip to England with my mathematician father, George Andrews, he discovered the Lost Notebook of Ramanujan in the Wren Library, forgotten for over half a century in a box of dusty papers. This moment changed my life and eventually led to this book. Click the video above or the button below to hear this story!
